The BMW 328i was launched in 2012 and was marketed as a "touring" model.

It featured a turbocharged four-cylinder engine at the top-end, with a top speed of 155mph.

Writing a review for The Times shortly after the car's debut, Clarkson said: "The BMW 3-series is now one of only two traditional four-door saloons to feature in Britain’s top 10 bestseller list, which means it must strike a chord here, too.

"And it’s not hard to see why: it’s the modern-day Ford Cortina.

"A no-nonsense design, done well.

"It doesn’t tear your face off, and it doesn’t make much of a noise, but this car can make serious progress, blurring its way though the eight cogs in the optional automatic gearbox and humming a happy little tune to itself as you scythe past other traffic and arc through corners as if you were a world championship water-ski-ist.

"This car is more like a scientific instrument than a means of transport.

"It’s delightful."

When it was new, the 328i cost £29,060, which is equivalent to about £40,000 today when you take inflation into account.

That makes it even more remarkable that you can pick one up for less than £10,000.

Car that became running Top Gear gag is Europe’s most popular

One listing on PistonHeads offers a 2012 328i for £9,000 on the dot, with just 60,594 miles on the clock.

The white roadster has only had one owner previously and generates a hefty 241 horsepower.

A check with the DVSA shows it has passed every MOT since 2018, with its only fail coming because a single wheel nut was missing.

It was last tested in January and passed with no advisories.

The listing states that it comes with an in-built alarm, cruise control, four driving modes and even a first aid kit.

Photos show it to be in excellent condition, with a pristine, leather-trimmed interior and spotless floor mats.

It comes after CarSOS star Fuzz Townshend gave fans a peek inside his 50-year-old classic bus.
