Southgate, 53, left his position following the defeat to Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.

He resigned with a better record than anyone in the job since 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey, winning 61 of his 102 matches during his eight-year tenure.

On top of overseeing England's run to two successive Euros finals - Southgate guided his country to a World Cup semi-final and a World Cup quarter-final.

But having bid farewell to the role, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham confirmed that the search for a successor was already underway.

There's no immediate rush given England's next match is against the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League on 7 September.

Reports suggest the FA are "very unlikely" to limit themselves to just English managers, while Bullingham revealed that an "interim solution" is in place if required.

So who is most likely to be appointed the next England manager?

William Hill have joint-favourites with Eddie Howe and Graham Potter the 9/4 frontrunners.

The Newcastle boss, 46, has long been admired by the FA and has proven his credentials over the last couple of seasons by guiding Newcastle to a top-four finish in the Premier League and qualification for the Champions League.

However, Magpies executive Darren Eales says the club are determined to keep their man and will resist any approaches from the FA.

Lee Carsley is also in the mix at 10/3 with many believing he's the "interim solution" that Bullingham was alluding to.

Although it's worth remembering that caretaker managers must take charge for 10 consecutive competitive matches to be deemed a winner in this betting market.

Jurgen Klopp (7/1) is the only other candidate available at single-figure prices following his Liverpool departure at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Mauricio Pochettino and Frank Lampard are next at 11/1 and 12/1 respectively, with former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel just behind at 16s.

Manchester City's Pep Guardiola is available at 16/1 with his contract at the Etihad Stadium expires in June 2025. Joachim Low, Jose Mourinho and Ange Postecoglou are all locked together at a distant 33/1 with William Hill.
