But as the big day actually arrives, the family have opted for sweet and simple tributes on Instagram, sharing rare insights into their family life together.

Kate posted two photos into the same Stories – one from when Lorenz was just a child sitting on her lap, while the other was from last month’s party.

She joked he was “towering over her now” and wrote: “Happy 18th birthday to our eldest. I am forever proud of you and so grateful I have you in my life.

“Keep shining. Love you always xxx”

Proud dad Rio also shared a collection of pictures from throughout the years, including pics of him as a child through to him partying with his dad at his birthday bash.

“What a young man this one’s growing up to be,” Rio wrote.

“We couldn’t be prouder. I love you Renz.”

Lorenz is Rio Ferdinand’s eldest child with first wife, Rebecca Ellison, who tragically died of breast cancer in 2015.

The couple also had 15-year-old Tate and 12-year-old Tia before she passed away.

Kate and Rio have been together since 2016, and together they have raised Lorenz, Tate and Tia, as well as having two children of their own, three-year-old Cree and Shae, who was born in July 2023.

Lorenz has clearly followed the family’s love of football, expressing an interest in having a promising career.

Which shouldn’t come as a surprise as three members of his family have played in the Premier League

Lorenz completed a season at Brighton and Hove Albion's youth set-up in May. But while dad Rio made his name as a no nonsense centre back for West Ham and Manchester United, Lorenz is doing things his own way and was a goalkeeper for the Seagulls' academy.
