AN Alfa Romeo that starred in a legendary episode of a BBC comedy has gone up for sale for just £30,000.

The car was presented as the height of luxury when it made its TV bow but has depreciated quite heavily since then, despite its excellent condition.

The 1993 Alfa Romeo Spider, finished in striking red, made an appearance in the beloved comedy Absolutely Fabulous back in the '90s.

In the episode, main character Edina (played by Jennifer Saunders) is forced to give up her chauffeur-driven car in a bid to balance her budget.

However, in a characteristically tone-deaf move, she then buys the plush Alfa, claiming it was the "smallest car I could find".

Unfortunately, the story did not have a happy ending as the car was clamped during a trip to luxury department store Harvey Nichols with best pal Patsy, played by Joanna Lumley.

Now, almost exactly 30 years after that episode aired, the exact car used for the show has gone up for sale through Iconic Auctioneers.

The listing states: "Crack open the 'Bolly' for the car famously clamped outside Harvey Nichols.

"Apart from Del Boy’s Reliant Robin and Ford Capri, few comedies featured a specific car as part of the plot, more often used as mere props to establish a character’s image, with limited screen time.

"Superbly written by and starring Jennifer Saunders, the outrageous antics of Edina and Joanna Lumley’s iconic Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous first delighted audiences in 1992 and led to a 2016 feature film.

"The car is not without a few scuffs to the paintwork, but as an Italian roadster that has 46,326 miles, on British roads from new, the condition is remarkable overall."

The gorgeous classic will go under the hammer at Iconic's Collector's Car Sale at Silverstone on August 24.

Despite its small screen history and exceptional condition, the guide price starts from just £26,000.

Even then, it is only expected to net around £30,000.

Arwel Richards, classic car specialist at Iconic, added: "We are delighted to offer for sale this very special Alfa Romeo that starred in the much-loved Absolutely Fabulous.

"It is an ideal first time classic or a must-have for any die-hard fan of the show.

"I'm sure the happy buyer will be cracking the 'Bolly when the hammer falls."

It comes after a classic sports car that was left sitting in a barn for 60 years was discovered to be worth an eye-watering sum.
