"[Liverpool sporting director] Richard [Hughes] more than me is working really hard on that. He keeps me updated on that.

It would be a surprise for all of us if we don't bring any player in. For now, we're just waiting for the players to come back and the right ones to sign."

The £50milion Belgium midfielder rejected better financial terms from United for a five-year-Villa deal.

Onana claims it was a careful calculation and in the final analysis he believed Emery could improve his game quicker than Ten Hag could.

Asked why he snubbed United for Villa, Onana told Belgian sports paper La Derniere Heure: "I think that's where I should be (Villa).

"For me, Aston Villa is part of the top of English football. The ranking speaks for itself and is significant.

"The general public may think that it is not the most glamorous club but it was the best choice for the player I am today.

"Aston Villa is a top club. I went where I felt the right ambition and the best project to make me grow.

"The environment seemed the most conducive to my development and I will be able to work with Unai Emery, one of the most qualified coaches in the field."

  • 'Crazy to sign Watkins but perfect for Arsenal!'

Arsenal have been told Ollie Watkins would be a perfect recruit - thanks to Martin Odegaard.

Ex-Gunners defender William Gallas believes the Aston Villa striker would thrive at the Emirates because of Odegaard's passing and playmaking.

    Credit: Getty

Gallas told Gambling Zone: "If you bring in a player who is 28 years old, people will tell you he's too old. It’s crazy but its true!

"I really like the Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins – I think he would be a great signing for Arsenal and I’ve been told that he supported the club as a boy.

"I like him because I like his movement. Arsenal need a player like him, someone that can create space for his teammates. I'm sure he could form a great partnership with Martin Odegaard, because that boy can move very well. He makes runs at the right time.

He would definitely score 20 goals playing in this Arsenal team. He got 19 in the Premier League last season playing for Villa. He would score goals for fun if he played with top quality players!"

Old Trafford chief Erik ten Hag is thought to have been impressed with how the Morocco anchorman finished the season.

And Tedeschi told Firenze Viola, he said: “In my opinion there is a concrete possibility of bringing Amrabat back to Manchester United.

“In my opinion there was some doubt also because it was not known whether Ten Hag would stay.

“Now that it’s certain that he will stay, there are grounds to think about bringing Amrabat back even on loan with obligation, or at a lower figure. The United solution is the easiest.”

  • It all adds up to a move for Jhon

Jhon Duran's number appears to be up at Aston Villa.

It was an excellent start to his time in West London but the shine was taken off by his setback.

A club statement confirmed: "Brentford’s Igor Thiago suffered a meniscus injury during the Bees’ 5-2 victory over AFC Wimbledon.

"The striker, who scored a brace on his first appearance for the club, is unavailable for this evening's game against Benfica and will have further scans next week to determine the extent of the injury."

  • Maresca doesn't rule out new keeper

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has refused to rule out the possibility of signing a new shot-stopper this summer.

Reports have suggested that the Blues are closing in on a deal to sign Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen for around £17m.

Jorgensen would be the third keeper signed since Todd Boehly took over at Stamford Bridge, after the arrivals of Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic.

When quizzed on adding a new goalkeeper to his ranks, Maresca said: "The way we want to play, the goalkeeper is very, very important — one of the main positions. And I don't want to talk about players that are not Chelsea players but I am very happy with Robert [Sanchez].

"We'll see, we'll see [about bringing in a new goalkeeper]. In this moment we have four goalkeepers. Petrovic is still with us but injured.

"We will see with the timing. When the transfer window is open, anything can happen for us and for the rest."
